Things unrelated to my lecture today that I nonetheless learnt from my lecture today.

  1. Kellogg’s Corn Flakes were invented partly in an attempt to reduce sexual drive.
  2. The etymology of the word ‘toxic’ is traced to the Greek word for ‘bow’ and relates to the ancient military practice of dipping arrows in faeces before firing them in an attempt to kill initial survivors by infection.
  3. The ‘Rx’ that precedes many hand written prescriptions literally translates from its latin root as ‘take’ or ‘take this’ and not ‘recipe’.
  4. The first successful treatments for hypothyroidism involved giving people animal thyroid glands to eat. This lead to many people eating other animal organs in treatment attempts including the practice of eating animal testes in France, which lacks any scientific merit whatsoever.
